Android will be able to detect if your phone has been snatched

It’s one of a slew of new privacy and theft prevention measures arriving in the near future.

Android Phone Detection Lock

Google is announcing an array of new security features as it releases its second Android 15 beta, including a feature that can detect the moment your phone is swiped from your hands. Some of these updates will be included with Android 15 when it arrives this fall, but theft detection and a number of other features will be available to phones with much older OS versions, too — bringing them to many more people.

How Theft Detection Lock Works

MTheft Detection Lock works by recognizing the unusual motions that would indicate someone has yanked your phone out of your hand or a table in front of you. To prevent a thief from being able to access information on your device, the screen automatically locks. The system looks for other signals that indicate foul play, too, and will be able to...

Prime Video just found a way to take its terrible ads to the next level

Prime Video just found a way to take its terrible ads to the next level

Amazon wants to add shoppable ads during movies, TV shows and live events.

Amazon has been tinkering with the ads on Prime Video a lot this year. And it's about to get crappier.

In January, Amazon turned on limited ads as a default option for Prime Video. This means that most shows and movies will have, at the very least, advertisements before the program starts, if you're lucky. If not, you get ads inserted into movies and shows at seemingly random times.

And users have been complaining, and rightfully so since Prime Video is a service people pay for — at least ostensibly through their Amazon Prime subscription. In fact, Amazon has even been sued over Prime Video ads. Anyone who doesn't want to have ads on Prime Video has to pay an extra $3 a month for the option.

Now Amazon is experimenting with advertising and shopping. Ahead of upfront presentations to advertisers, Amazon is working to make it easier to buy products while watching shows, movies or sports on Prime Video.

Netflix Premiumflation Strikes Again

Netflix Premiumflation Strikes Again

The Hidden Costs of Premium Inflation

Low-cost streaming was fun while it lasted but it's quickly getting more expensive. A new trend these days among many companies is called Premiumflation.

Instead of increasing prices directly, companies introduce a more "premium" version of their product. This new version often outperforms the standard one, making the original product less desirable or functional. As a result, consumers end up paying more for the premium version without realizing that they're effectively experiencing a price increase.

Netflix eliminates Basic Plan only to be replaced by a more expensive plan

The old basic plan offered streaming to 1 device for 720p, at reasonable monthly cost of $9.99/month. But this plan is being eliminated with a new Standard plan that offers 1080p HD ad free streaming to two devices as long as they are in your home and not shared with anyone for $16.49 a month.

They are still offering their ad supported plan for an affordable $6.99/month which allows streaming to two devices. Streaming companies would much rather drive subscribers to plans with ads as it increases profits.

With their current offerings, the lowest cost Netflix plan with ads may be the best deal, especially if you can use it on devices with adblocker.
